About me
I’m a registered dietitian (RD) based in Northern Virginia/Washington DC. I completed my undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise from Virginia Tech and currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Nutrition at James Madison University.
As a nutrition consultant, I speak and give workshops on several nutrition topics, present in health fairs, and provide grocery store tours (didn’t you know such things exist?). My “Services” page has more information. I’m also a freelance writer and several of my writing samples are under “Articles.”
I’m active in the nutrition community. Professional memberships include:
- Northern District Virginia Dietetics Association (NDVDA), serving as the Consumer Trends Council on Practice chairperson
- American Dietetic Association (ADA), member
- Nutrition Entrepreneurs Dietetics Practice Group of ADA, member
- Dietitians in Business and Communications Dietetic Practice Group of ADA, member
- Muslims in Dietetics and Nutrition, Member Interest Group of ADA, member
- The Center for Mindful Eating (TCME), member
I’m a foodie. I love to experiment with food and sometimes come up with my own recipes. Growing up in the Middle East eating a somewhat Mediterranean diet, combined with a degree in nutrition, I always have vegetables on my menu—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Call me crazy but going to the grocery store for me is like going to the mall. I like to shop around, pick the best produce, find the best deals, and walk around the aisles to experiment with “new” products I’ve never had before.
But I also like to fix quick healthy meals. You’ll see many of those. And there’s a place for chocolate in my diet.
Despite my knowledge of exercise benefits, and despite my countless efforts to hit the gym REGULARLY, I didn’t really enjoy it until after I had my son. Other than the extra pounds I wanted to lose, it was my time to de-stress and take care of me—a much needed practice after the baby arrived. I want to run a marathon with my friend one day! My point is, give your body a chance to be fit, and it won’t give you the chance to go back.
When I’m not working, I like to have a good time with my family and friends. Whenever possible, I’d rather be under the blue sky.
The goal of my blog is to bring you practical information on health, nutrition, and food. I digest studies and products so you have the facts to use in your real life. Of course with the media being so focused on health and nutrition, I’ll have to make comments about some alluring ads, so forgive my skepticism.
